Halloween is fast approaching and you can almost smell the excitement! There are so many new costumes out there in fancy dress land we are going to be spoilt for choice yet again.

So what will it be this time? A movie costume perhaps. There are several possibles to consider, Thor has been a huge hit and for the boys dressing up as a Viking and carrying a very BIG hammer. How about Captain America: The First Avenger. Now there is a very good selection of outfits available for all the family so it would be good choice for a group.

You may just have the very member of your family who is perfect for jumping in to an Iron Man costume, they are available in some great colours, gold and burgundy.

For the teens and ladies, some amazing outfits have appeared across the screen this year, almost made for Halloween: Sucker Punch was the movie, and there are some really dazzling disguises for you to delight and amaze yourself, when you glance in the mirror.

So this year why not have a real change from the vampires, swamp monsters and witches, and head to Hollywood for your inspiration?

The Mighty Thor

With the onset of The Avengers currently bursting onto our screens here in movie land, there will be no shortage of ideas for the kid's Halloween costume come September when the hunt will be on!
The God of War is sure to get the "thumbs up" sign from the would-be super heroes, he has some amazing accessories to make his costume look the very best at the party.
Thor costumes can be worn by adults and children alike, so if you are planning on a family Halloween celebration this year, this could be a great choice for you all.
Girls can be Avengers too by the way, and there are some pretty awesome outfits for the ladies too.

Vampires

Vampires and all things vampiree have never been so popular.

The famous novelist Bram Stoker who died in 1912, is perhaps best remembered for his Gothic novel entitled "Dracula". His writings have become part of horror culture at it's finest.

Bram Stoker had spent many years researching his subject, becoming an expert on myths and legends concerning vampire folklore in Europe. He cleverly wrote the novel as a jumble of newspapers cuttings, diary entries and letters. This held his reader in the palm of his hand as we yearned to know what was going to happen.

Is is believed that the inspiration behind Count Dracula came from Prince Vlad the Impaler. Vlad the third lived during the 15th century and was infamous for the impaling of his enemies as his preferred choice of execution, rather than any vampire tendencies.

My own preferred Dracula-type would have to be Barnabas Collins, played brilliantly by actor Fonathan Frid during the dying era of the sixties. This character is to be reprieved by the effervescent Mr Johnny Dep in the remake of Dark Shadows.

Mad Hatter Costumes

This year, 2010, a Mad Hatter Costume is turning out to be extremely popular amongst people dressing up at Halloween.
Alice in Wonderland and all the characters from the famous story have always been popular for fancy dress ideas, but thanks to the popularity of Johnny Depp taking on the part of The Mad Hatter, and making it his own, as he always manages to do with his movies, the costumes are much in demand.
There are some fabulous Hatter masks to be found too, for folk who usually make up their own Halloween fancy dress outfit, and just want to accessorize it.
Of course, there are bags of amazing choices from Alice in Wonderland just created for Halloween it would seem. Alice herself and the white rabbit will transform anyone into a fairytale star with the merest flick of a magic wand!

Alice in Wonderland 2010

We see Alice Kingsleigh who’s father, Charles Kingsleigh has died, and he is the one person who Alice is really missing, especially for the fun he brought into her life.

She finds herself at a garden party where it is hoped she will agree to marry Hamish. Hamish is the son of a business partner her dad had. She is really bored with the whole thing, and feels trapped in the world she is living in. Everything is taken so seriously these days.

She wanders around the garden, and presently finds herself looking at a furry animal. It’s a rabbit wearing a waistcoat and soon she follows after him.

Following the rabbit they soon arrive at the trunk of an old tree and she then finds herself falling down a hole.

At the bottom of the hole she discovers herself in a room, and looking around sees a drink some cake and a key. The drink says it will make her shrink, and the cake will make her grow bigger.

She drinks the drink, which we know is wrong because we shouldn't drink anything we are not sure of.

Anyway, she shrinks enough to get through the door, and finds herself in a garden.

That's when the story really get wacky!

Halloween is a great time for teenagers, or anyone else for that matter, to slip on a disguise, and pretend to be some one completely different.
We would all like to be someone else sometimes, probably not a manic werewolf or curse of the living mummy, but we all occasionally feel the need to shed our coat of conservativeness and be daring for a change.
Halloween gives teenagers especially, the chance to have a different image from their normal one, well I hope so for their parents sake anyway!
Gothic horror is very much in vogue, with the constant serving of movies and t.v. shows consisting of tongue-in-cheek, and tooth-in-neck madness.
It's all good fun, and does help to take the fright right out of frightening for the younger teens watching it.

Alice in Wonderland was one of those books/films that were always a bit on the scary side for children. So it's no surprise that Johnny Depp is making The Mad Hatter costume so popular this Halloween. After all Halloween costumes whether for adults, couples or scary kids, is just right for Alice and The Mad Hatter. There are alot of scary characters in it, The Dark Heart Queen being the most scary, although personally I never did trust the Rabbit!

When you and your friends go out this Halloween dressed in a scary costume, be it Captain Jack Sparrow along with his pirate friends, or Hansel and Gretel spare a thought to the children in other countries who are doing the same thing on the same evening. In Scotland although the concept is the same, the children over there call it "Guising".
They go out as part of a small group and call in at houses where the adults are known to them, and upon entering each takes a turn at entertaining their hosts. Be it with a song, a poem or a joke. Their reward is sometimes money, but usually some candy, fruit or peanuts.
The children in Scotland dress up in the same Halloween costumes as the children in the United States, with a new Harry Potter film on the go, he's sure to be popular on both sides of the Atlantic.

Halloween costumes are available for mans best friend these days with the headless horseman costume being a firmfavourite. If you are going to dress up your dog please make sure that he is comfortable in his costume and that he is part of the overall fun of the occasion and not just there to be laughed at. Dogs do not like being laughed at but they do like to share in the festivities of Halloween as it is a time for the 'whole' family. Also some dogs and cats are afraid of loud noises so do take care if you are using fireworks under supervision of a responsible adult even if they are dressed up like a zombie!

Don't tear up the best sheets!

One of the best and easiest costume ideas we ever made was to tear an old white sheet into strips like bandages. Carefully wrapping them around our son from head to toe took a bit of care as he insisted on seeing out and being able to move! Very selfish of him as we thought we would get a bit of peace that Halloween. Anyway adding a bit of fake blood here and there added to the look and he was ready to venture out. Thankfully it was a dry evening as the costume could have fallen apart, but he looked great and had loads of fun as he went around the neighbours houses guising.

Dressing up at Halloween is great fun for everyone, adults and children. With thousands of costumes available to choose from it can be difficult to know what to wear. You don't need to spend a fortune online buying a Halloween costume as there are plenty of ways to make your own if you have the time.
It can be great fun going out on Halloween with friends and family as a group, all wearing costumes that are in the same theme. A family could dress up as The Flintstones or The Incredibles. A couple could be Bonnie & Clyde or Batman and The Joker. The choice is endless. What ever you decide to wear I hope you have a lot of fun!
